The Beaches of Normandy

Normandy, France. World War II site of the largest sea-born invasion in history. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, allied forces, led by the United States, Great Britain and Canada launched a massive assault on the beaches of Normandy to establish a foothold on the European continent and begin the liberation of France from Nazi Germany.

By the light of the full moon and a high tide, 156,000 Allied troops landed on 5 beaches on a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast and marked the beginning of the end of the war in Europe, with great cost and heavy casualties.

To this day, people lay flowers on the beaches and cemeteries in Normandy, to honor those who gave the greatest sacrifice.
